Below is a guide to the training opportunities available to you during the Autumn Term.

Developing ICT Skills For Teachers

Blackpool and Fylde college have a Promethean White Board course starting January 12th and 13th from 5 till 7pm. These consist of six sessions holding 15 places on each. Please contact the college for further information.

You can register your interest in ICT skills courses online at www.teachers.org.uk/training/ICT-name-add.php. You will then receive advanced course details and a priority application form when further courses are organised in this area.

NUT health and safety representatives in all schools have a vital role to play in monitoring the conditions in which teaching and learning take place. The Union’s course covers all aspects of law and regulation relevant to health and safety in schools. This course aims to: give you practical support and up-to-date information to help you in your role; and help you to develop the knowledge and skills you require in order to carry out your role to maximum effect. This course is for new and existing NUT health and safety representatives.

Who should attend: Health and safety representatives in schools, colleges, services or units.

As the NUT School Representative, you are members’ first point of contact with their Union. If you have not already attended a school representatives’ course, then you should do so without delay.

Sixth Form College Representatives' Briefing

Wednesday June 9 2010 - Friday June 11 2010 (Code: SFC/10)

Length: 3 days

This course provides training for college representatives new to the role and those in need of an update of their skills. The course aims to: extend your knowledge of the NUT and your rights as college representative; build your confidence in representing NUT members in your college; and equip you with strategies to manage the role of college representative alongside the demands of your professional role.

Members in Independent Schools

Friday June 25 2010 - Sunday June 27 2010 (Code: IND/10)

Length: 3 days

Are you an NUT member working in an independent school? If so, this course is for you.You will find out about: your rights; the support available to you from the NUT; key NUT policies; and how to become more active in the NUT. You will have the opportunity to meet colleagues from independent schools in England and Wales. It’s too good to miss!

Moving into Management

Wednesday July 7 2010 - Friday July 9 2010 (Code: MIM/10)

Length: 3 days

Are you considering moving into management? Then you should attend this course! Topics covered include making the most of people, delegating, problem solving and presentation skills. The course aims to: assist you in identifying your personal and professional development needs; define and develop management skills; identify the role of NUT members as managers as well as trade unionists; and promote the NUT’s policies in the context of good school management practice.

Who should attend: All members who wish to move into middle and senior management.

School Leadership: A Trade Union Approach

Monday June 14 2010 - Wednesday June 16 2010 (Code: SL/10)

Length: 3 days

This unique course emphasises that there is no conflict between being a trade unionist and a school manager. The course aims to: identify the role of NUT members as senior managers as well as trade unionists; provide you with strategies and advice on school management issues; and clarify and promote the NUT’s policies in relation to school leadership and management.

Who should attend: Members of the leadership group, including headteachers, deputy and assistant headteachers in schools, colleges, services and units.

Woman's Development

Friday June 25 2010 - Sunday June 27 2010 (Code: WD/10)

Length: 3 days

If you are a woman teacher in need of a boost, this is the course for you!

The course aims to help you to: develop professionally and personally, by providing strategies which you can practise, including assertiveness and presentation skills; become more involved in and informed about the NUT and its work; and decide on your own professional or trade union priorities and recognise the skills that you have.,/p>

Stress And Well-being: whole School Approaches

Wednesday February 10 2010 - Friday February 12 2010 (Code: SW/10)

Length: 3 days

Over recent years stress has been regarded as one of the main problems in schools. However there are many strategies that individuals and schools can adopt to ensure a positive approach to stress and wellbeing.

The course, which is being run in conjunction with The Teacher Support Network, will examine: NUT policy on whole school approaches to stress and wellbeing; factors which can cause or prevent stress; audit and evaluation tools in the area of stress and wellbeing ; individual strategies for tackling stress and promoting wellbeing; school cultures which promote wellbeing; and specific issues for pupils and staff. The course will emphasise that NUT members can make a difference in promoting wellbeing in schools.

Who should attend: Serving teachers in schools, colleges, services and units; student members; and members of the leadership group, including headteachers, deputy and assistant headteachers

School Representatives: Second Level

Monday March 22 2010 - Wednesday March 24 2010 (Code: SLR1/10)
Wednesday June 16 2010 - Friday June 18 2010 (Code: SLR2/10)

Length: 3 Days

Experienced NUT representatives now have an opportunity to develop their skills and knowledge. This course will address: current educational issues and their implications for NUT representatives; how to represent and support members; negotiating techniques; moving on to local officer roles; and strategies to manage the NUT representatives’ role alongside the demands of your professional role.

Who should attend: Representatives in schools, colleges, services and units who have attended, prior to April 2008, the standard course for NUT representatives. Note: Teachers with management experience are advised to apply for the School Leadership: A Trade Union Approach course.

Teachers as Governors

Wednesday November 18 2009 - Friday November 20 2009 (Code: TGV/09)

Length: 3 days

Teachers who are governors have a crucial role on the governing bodies of schools. Throughout this course, the NUT seeks to support you in your role. This aims to: Extend your knowledge of the role and remit of the teacher as governor; Promote your confidence and develop your skills, particularly in handling governing body meetings; and Provide information on some of the main issues affecting schools, including salary matters, appointments and promotion procedures, conditions of service, budgets and equal opportunities.

Who Should Attend: Teachers who are governors in all types of schools.

International Development: It's Union Work

Friday March 26 2010 - Sunday March 28 2010 (Code: ID/10)

Length: 3 days

The NUT has a proud record of campaigning work on international development and poverty reduction. This course aims to: provide members with ideas of how to get involved at NUT local level in promoting international development; raise awareness of international development issues; discuss the distinct role that teachers’ unions can play in international development and poverty reduction; and provide practical examples of activities that can be carried out by NUT members locally.

Who Should Attend: All members who would like to be involved locally in international development issues.

Newly Qualified Teachers

Friday January 29 2010 - Sunday January 31 2010 (Code: NQ/10)

Length: 3 days

Are you in your first year of teaching? If so, this course is for you. Come along to find out: how the NUT can support and protect you; what the NUT advises about teacher induction; what the NUT stands for; and how you can become more involved with your Union.

Who should attend: Newly qualified teachers and those training on school-based routes including the graduate, registered and overseas trained teacher and Teach First programmes.

Just Qualified Summer Workshop

Monday July 26th 2010 - Wednesday July 28th 2010

Length: 3 days

Are you a trainee teacher who will qualify to teach in 2009? Apply for the NUT’s summer workshop for just qualified teachers. The NUT's just-qualified summer workshop covers survival tips, pupil behaviour, voice care, NUT training, CPD opportunities and what the NUT can offer. It’s for all new teachers qualifying in 2010.

It’s all FREE! Accommodation, meals and course materials are all included. Your travelling expenses will be refunded. It’s the best survival course you can attend.
