Health and Safety Representatives

Monday December 1 to Friday December 5 2008

NUT health and safety representatives in all schools have an essential role to play in monitoring the conditions in which teaching and learning take place. The Union’s course covers all aspects of law and regulation relevant to health and safety in schools. This course aims to: give you practical support and up-to-date information to help you in your role; and help you to develop the knowledge and skills you require in order to carry out your role to maximum effect. Who should attend: New and existing health and safety representatives in schools, colleges, services or units.

School Representatives

Wednesday November 19 to Friday November 21 2008

As the NUT school representative, you are members’ first point of contact with their Union. If you have not already attended a school representatives’ course, then you should do so without delay. This course aims to: build your confidence in your relationship with management and NUT members; increase your awareness of the NUT and its resources and how these can assist you in your role; and equip you with strategies to: – represent the NUT; extend your knowledge of the NUT and of teachers’ conditions of service; and manage the role of NUT representative alongside the demands of your professional role. Who should attend: Representatives in schools, colleges, services or units.

Part-Timers, Supply Teachers and Returners

Wednesday September 24 to Friday September 26 2008

Part-timers, supply teachers and returners fulfil an increasingly important role in the education service. This course has proved to be very valuable as a springboard into new career opportunities and involvement in the NUT. The course aims to: provide you with information and advice on the NUT’s support for part-time teachers, supply teachers and returners; help you decide on your priorities and recognise your professional skills; and help you to think about how you want to develop, professionally, personally and in terms of involvement with your Union. Who should attend: Part-time teachers, supply teachers, returners or those contemplating a return to teaching

Newly Qualified Teachers

Friday November 7 2008 to Sunday November 9 2008

Are you in your first year of teaching? If so, this course is for you. Come along to find out: how the NUT can support and protect you; what the NUT advises about teacher induction; what the NUT stands for; and how you can become more involved with your Union. Who should attend: Newly qualified teachers and those training on school-based routes including the graduate, registered and overseas trained teacher and Teach First programmes.

NUT Black Teachers’ Conference

31st October to 2nd November 2008

Equal Access to Promotion

The next course is based around a residential seminar at NCSL, Nottingham on Monday, 10 and Tuesday, 11 November 2008.

Four EAP courses during 2008 and 2009 from NUT CPD and the National College for School Leadership (NCSL). For: Black and minority ethnic (BME) teachers in middle leadership roles in schools (usually with 4 to 9 years of teaching experience) who are aspiring to more senior leadership. Each course includes three elements – introductory task, two-day residential seminar, and follow-up school-based leadership study. Cost: FREE (including one day’s supply cover for schools). University of Cambridge/NUT CPD

Four new Learning Circles will start in early November at NUT HQ in London and central venues in Manchester, Walsall and Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk.

Each circle will be open to teachers (all KSs) – within 1½ hour journey to/from venues – who wish to complete a teacher-led enquiry of their choice and achieve accreditation for their portfolio of evidence. Approx. 15 hours of tutored collaborative learning and preparation plus a similar amount of self-directed, school-based investigation/ evidence gathering.

‘Come Rain, Come Shine – Outdoor Play’

TF/42 Cardiff – Thurs, 13 & Fri, 14 November 2008 (9.30-4.30 both days)

For: Nursery, early years and Year 1 teachers and colleagues introducing or at early stages of developing outdoor play. Tutors: SALLY ATKINSON and GILL ROBERTS Aims: Placing children at the centre of outdoor provision, with reference to the EYFS. Cost: As TF/40R above. Dinner and B&B on day 1 (OPTIONAL in Cardiff)

‘Supply Teachers – Managing Classroom Behaviour’

TF/37R:Liverpool – Thurs, 30 & Fri, 31 Oct 08 9.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m

For: Full/part-time supply teachers – all KSs – who have not attended this two-day seminar previously. Tutor: PETE HREKOW . For supply teachers within 1½ hour journey to/from venue. No accommodation, no travel expenses. Cost: FREE (NUT); £100 (others). Includes VAT, lunches and refreshments. .

‘Getting the ******s to Behave’

OD/46: NUT HQ, London – Friday, 17 October 2008 OD/47: Birmingham – Tuesday, 21 October 2008 OD/48: Manchester – Wednesday, 22 October 2008 OD/49: Bristol – Thursday, 6 November 2008 Each seminar: 9.45 a.m. – 4.00 p.m.

For: NQTs with their mentors/induction tutors. Tutor: SUE COWLEY Aims: Further develop NQTs’ strategies for improving behaviour for learning and classroom management. Share good practice in tutoring, coaching and mentoring during the NQT ‘induction year’. Cost: £30 for pair (where at least one NUT member); £100 for other pairs. Includes VAT, lunch and refreshments. Small groups of one induction tutor with up to 3 NQTs (from same school) welcome – pro rata costs to be agreed.

‘Making Effective Interventions in Pupil Behaviour’

TF/41R: York – Tues, 14 and Wed, 15 Oct 2008 TF/43R: Reading – Mon, 8 and Tues, 9 Dec 2008 (All days = 9.30 am to 4.30 pm)

For: Mid-career teachers (approx. 7 to 20 years experience) within 1½ hour journey to/from venue – who have not previously completed teachers-together course of the same title. Tutor: ROB LONG Cost: FREE (NUT); £100 (others). Includes VAT, lunches and refreshments. OPTIONAL one night’s dinner with B&B at end of first day.
